Landscape Architecture Frontiers (CN 10-1467/TU, ISSN 2096-336X) was founded in 2013, jointly administered by Higher Education Press and Peking University. The founding editor-in-chief was Professor Kongjian Yu of the College of Architecture and Landscape, Peking University. The journal’s editorial board consists of nearly one hundred members from China and abroad.
Aims and Scope
Landscape Architecture Frontiers (LAF) is an international academic journal putting its focus on the role and influence of Landscape Architecture research and practice on global sustainability. Publishing bimonthly, the journal introduces new ideas, emerging theories, and cutting-edge methods that respond to hotspot topics and pressing challenges with design solutions. Anchoring land and outdoor spatial practice, the journal presents works that bridge academic studies and material implementation, respond to human-land relationships through design approaches, synergize ecological governance and societal visions, and integrate scientific thinking with aesthetical representation. The journal also emphasizes interdisciplinary studies and application—research for design, research on design, and research through design—witnessing and propelling the advance of contemporary Landscape Architecture.
LAF highlights efforts that integrate and translate multi-disciplinary knowledge and research findings into application. It encourages not only the practice innovativeness in the full process of landscape planning/design (from conceptualization, construction, governance to evaluation), but also authentic cases that find out the pitfalls of theory and knowledge in application and the gaps between research and practice.
LAF calls for original submissions that demonstrate and contribute to one or several of the following topics: 1) exploration of theories, technologies, methodologies, and tools in landscape planning and design, as well as allied fields; 2) landscape planning and design, Nature-based Solutions, urban and regional planning, urban design, and urban renewal addressing issues related to climate change, biodiversity, ecological restoration, rural development, design justice, and human health and well-being; and 3) instructional experience and design critiques on the above topics.
Main Columns
Research Papers
This column invites rigorous research contributions, including theoretical studies, empirical research, and review articles on critical issues of urban, rural, or natural landscapes. We encourage action-oriented, interdisciplinary studies, particularly those focusing on water-driven, land-based climate resilience, public health, and sustainability.
Innovative Perspectives
This column invites perspectives for theoretical, educational, and professional innovations. This column focuses on sharing ideas that have not been implemented or constructed but hold great potential to promote or change the future development of landscape research or practice.
Pioneering Practices
This column features innovative and impactful educational or professional projects. We welcome work that critically examines the application of theory and empirical research in practice, with particular interest in exploratory and experimental design. Submissions should address design challenges, ecological and social issues, and humanistic concerns, and may include reviews of similar projects that distill transferable design concepts.
Call for Submissions (Topics)
Urban and Regional Planning; Design Ecology; Urban Regeneration; Climate Adaptation; Ecological Restoration; Public Health and Well-Being; Design Justice; Cultural Landscape; Urban Design; Rural Development; Nature-based Solutions; Biodiversity; Landscape Education; Public Participation; Interdisciplinary Theories and Methods
Call for Guest Editors
LA Frontiers has published a number of special issues by collaborating with talented leading scholars in the fields across Landscape Architecture, Ecology, Urban Planning and Urban Studies, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies, etc. Together with the editorial team, guest editors are expected to organize special issues on frontier topics, contributing to interdisciplinary interests, expanding academia reaching, and increasing international influence of both the journal and the scholars.
