Liyan Xu is an associate professor at the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (CALA), Peking University, and the director of the Digital Technology and GeoDesign Laboratory at CALA. He holds a bachelor's degree in urban planning and a master's degree in human geography, both from Peking University; and a PhD in urban and regional planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His fields of expertise include theories and methods in spatiotemporal intelligence and environmental cognition, as well as their applications in spatial governance, planning, design, and cross-cutting areas. He received national research grands for four research projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Foundation of China, and the National Key R&D Program, and serves as the PI for more than 20 commissioned projects from ministries, international organizations, local governments and enterprises. He has published over fifty peer-reviewed papers in academic journals.
