ZHANG Tianxin 

Ph.D, Associate professor

Tianxin Zhang is an associate professor of urban design in College of Architecture and Landscape, Peking University, Beijing, China. His research interests include urban design methodology and theory, built-environment history, heritage preservation, national park planning, tourism planning, etc. He got his bachelor degree in architecture, master degree in human geography, and doctoral degree in urban design. His research and planning projects include the Influence of tourism on the Old Town of Lijiang as a world heritage site, master planning of Nanxijiang as a National Scenic Area, tourism planning of Fujin city, etc. He led students to attend several international design workshops in European and Asian countries in the last few years. He was a visiting scholar and gave lectures in McGill University and The University of Montreal. His recent research focuses on comparative Landscape Urbanism development across Asian and North American cities.


Education and Work Experience


Received a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from Tsinghua University, a Master's degree in Human Geography from Peking University (research focus: scenic area planning), and a Ph.D. in Urban Engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan (research focus: urban design). Formerly taught at the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University. Currently serves as Associate Professor at the School of Architecture and Landscape Design, Peking University.

He has led projects including the Rural Tourism Plan for Taojia Village, Tangyuan County, Jiamusi City; the Tourism Master Plan for Fujin City; the Tourism Master Plan for Qindeli Farm; the Feasibility Study for the Conservation and Development of Yan Village, Ningbo City; the Landscape Character Plan for Jiejinkou, Tongjiang City; the Study on the Impact of Expressways on Scenic Areas and Countermeasures; the Revision of the Master Plan for Nanxi River National Key Scenic Area; and the Detailed Plan for Taibai Mountain Scenic Area.

Supervised over 60 full-time and part-time graduate students to complete their theses and graduated, and previously guided approximately 10 undergraduates to complete their graduation theses.


Design Mentorship


Has led, co-organized, and participated in numerous domestic and international design courses, training camps, and events. These include organizing the Heilongjiang Fujin Rural Tourism Forum featuring experts from China, Japan, and Taiwan; leading and mentoring students in design training camps hosted by Sichuan University; co-hosting the Ning'er International Design Training Camp with the New York Institute of Interior Design and the University of Hong Kong; Served as a curriculum design review expert for the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Hong Kong; acted as the Chinese instructor for the China-Netherlands-Korea-Germany Quadrennial Summer Design Camp held in South Korea; served as the Chinese team instructor for the European EMILA Summer Camps held in the Netherlands, France, and Spain; served as a jury member for the European Landscape Biennale International Academic Competition; and participated in organizing and instructing the China-Japan-Thailand Student Design Camp held in Bangkok, Thailand.


Lecture Exchange


He has conducted academic exchanges and delivered lectures at numerous universities both domestically and internationally, including presentations at McGill University in Canada on “Symbolic and Phonetic Meanings of Chinese Characters in Representing Landscape Aesthetics,” at the University of Montreal in Canada on “The Strength of Weakness” and “Urban Design with Heritages,” and at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan on “A Brief Discussion on Urban Regeneration and Disaster Prevention.”
