On behalf of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the Malaysia–Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), and the Master of Science (Sustainable Urban Design -MSUD) programme, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Professor Yu Kongjian.

Although we did not have the privilege of meeting him personally, we were honoured to experience his visionary works during our visit to Turenscape. That encounter remains a lasting source of inspiration to our students and to ourselves.

Professor Yu’s pioneering vision of ecological urbanism and the “Sponge City” movement has profoundly shaped the global discourse on sustainable landscape and urban design. His philosophy will continue to guide us in Malaysia and beyond, as we strive to nurture resilient, ecological, and people-centered cities.

His legacy endures through the landscapes he transformed and the countless lives, including our own, that he touched with wisdom, humility, and hope for a better urban future.
