Remembering Kongjian, Michael wrote:

"The influence of Yu's design thinking, mentorship, and advocacy is felt by nearly every landscape architect working today. He was also a gregarious individual with boundless energy and optimism about the world. Talking to him for half an hour was like watching the sun come out from behind grey clouds. He left an indelible mark on the practice of design, the public realm, and perhaps most famously through his singular vision for climate-adaptive cities. As a pioneering theorist, a renowned educator, and the head of one of the most prolific landscape architecture practices in the world, he has expanded the reach and international relevance of our discipline like few others."
