Tribute to Yu Kongjian
I met Yu Kongjian in 2005 at the ASLA National Convention in Florida. We chatted in the back of a bus for an hour during a tour — a conversation I still remember fondly. He later invited me to visit Beijing, and in 2007 I lectured in his class about landscape planning.
I featured Yu in my Landscape History book as an example of a contemporary international designer whose vision reshaped the field. At Turenscape, he valued creativity and hired Michigan State University students for their strong ability to generate ideas.
Although I only saw him a few more times after that — usually surrounded by an entourage of admirers and colleagues — I always admired his passion, generosity, and global influence. He will be greatly missed.
