It is with shock and profound sorrow that we learn of Konjian Yu's death. Kongjian was a true visionary, an extraordinarily effective leader and teacher, whose influence has led to adoption of sustainable, environmentally sound landscape design in his native China and beyond. At Berkeley, we have been fortunate in recent years to host a half dozen of Kongjian's current and former PhD students, each of whom has embodied Kongjian's philosophy of sustainable design based on natural process. I have enjoyed learning of his new projects and new ideas having lunch with Kongjian during each of my annual visits to Beijing since 2017. This past March, David Sedlak and I hosted Kongjian for a week's visit to Berkeley, to speak in Berkeley Water Day, and to visit field sites such as Dutch Slough, a large wetland restoration project in the Central Valley. Kongjian's warmth easily won over my kids, who decided they wanted to visit China after Kongjian joined us for dinner. My condolences to Kongjian's family, friends, and colleagues.
